So, Looks like I’m buying a cheap fishing boat. What do you guys think of this deal. It’s a bit rough and needs a few mi
nor things but runs great and all the running gear has been rebuilt/replaced.

Thats a great little bay boat, and the price is a lot cheaper than I’d thought it would be for a Whaler. Those OMC 70 outboards are bulletproof, I have one on the Mako I’m refurbishing to sell.

Whalers are great boats. Used lots growing up. Seems like a decent price for a good ammount of boat.

I’ve never ridden in a Whaler that I thought was “nice .” They will pound the piss right out of you in a chop. I would put the value of that motor at about $10 00 . The downside to the Whaler is that it’s essentially a thin fiberglass shell encasing foam that can become waterlogged. The result is a super heavy boat.

Makos are also great boats. Growing up my dad had a 21' Center Console with a Johnson 225 outboard. That thing would rip.

Depends on where you use it, that's not an open ocean boat and as Sovande says it will beat you up in choppy water. But if you're in a river, lake, or calm intercoastal water it could be good. If you want to go in more open water you probably want a V-hull

I’ll probably spend most of my time fishing San Diego bay with the occasional run out to the kelp beds to go after yellowfin and white bass. There is a ton of great fishing in the bay, tho. Lot’s of halibut, striped/spotted bass, etc.

Catching a halibut in a 15' boat with about 8" of freeboard would be an experience!

Catching one on a Hobie mirage drive kayak is even more of one lol

It’s overpriced. I’m not sure it’s worth more than 3K or so. Check NADA. Old Evinrudes can run for a long time if you take care of them. Enjoy.

I used to kayak fish in Rhode Island. When they are running, you can catch 15 po und bluefish until your arms fall off. If you hooked a good one they would tow the kayak right back into the middle of the school of breaking fish. Tons of fun. I can’t even imagine what it must be like with a fish like a halibut.
Enjoy the search, all boats are a compromise, but if fishing is going to be the main focus, I would lean more towards something with more freeboard that allowed me to stand up and fish.

Whalers, like Toyota pickup trucks, seem to hold their value better than other boat builders, so that could be the di screpa ncy.

Yeah I have a Mirage tandem island, no fishing for me.

Mine’s an Outback. It’s a great compromise between a regular Kayak and one specifically f or fishing. Four rod holders and a fish finder mount/pass-through.

I’m from Hawaii, the only fishing I ever did was spearfishing . We had a huge three man on the top kayak we dove off. I like our tandem island, it’s an amazing boat.

I had a chance to sail one of those for an hour. Fantastic fun!

Yeah it’s amazing, I sold my old kayak right away when I tried one at Tahoe. It’s really two boats and I never would have guessed the mirage drive would be as good as it is for just kayaking. It’s nice to jibe in light wind with the pedals to keep speed up as well.

I seriously considered getting one, but I couldn’t justify the price given that it only holds two people.

We have the outriggers and trampolines so we can take dogs. Nobody but us anyway!
